Hi Allegra,

Parliament is back in full swing. We had some good news last week – Paid Parental leave passed the house to be extended from 20 to 26 weeks, the government announced it will introduce a fuel efficiency standard, the NSW government banned offshore gas exploration at PEP-11, and the Parliament finally began to have a serious conversation about tax. Another big week in Parliament this week, with tax and industrial relations and integrity top of the agenda.

Fighting for climate action and lower fuel bills

Last weekend, the government announced that it would introduce a fuel efficiency standard for new vehicles.

This is something that many of the Crossbench and myself have been pushing for since before the 2022 federal election. It will mean that households will spend less money when they fill up at the bowser, drive vehicles that emit less pollution, and get a broader choice of electric vehicles. See my Instagram explainer.

The government estimates that the new standards will save households around $1,000 per year in fuel costs. The government is holding a short community consultation for the design of these new standards and I strongly encourage the community to show your support for the changes by filling out the short survey here..

Stage 3 tax cuts: Wentworth's view

With the government's change in policies on the Stage 3 tax cuts having a big impact on Wentworth families, I wanted to understand what you thought before I returned to Parliament.

Over 1,700 people responded to our community survey or gave us feedback via email or in person at transport hubs. More than two-thirds of you backed the decision to re-shape the tax cuts, including many people who will be worse off as a result.

However, some Wentworth families were really counting on the scale of the original tax cuts for mortgages, rent and childcare.

Around of quarter of survey respondents wanted to retain the original Stage 3 proposal and 30% supported other measures to address cost-of-living pressures.

Broader tax reform

While the focus has been on Stage 3, I have been advocating with others on the importance of a broader conversation on tax - which it seems we are starting to have.

That is because tax is part of the solution to serious long-term issues facing our country including intergenerational equity and housing, climate change, growth and productivity.

Young people today are having a harder time than previous generations. If you look at the last 15 years, for a family headed by somebody over 65, their wealth increased over a decade by about 50 per cent. But for a family headed by a young person under the age of 35, their wealth pretty much did not move. Tax is a major factor in this.

At the same time, we know that productivity is at record lows and that affects our ability to pay for the government services we need and the tax system isn't properly driving climate action.

We need real tax reform – and everything should be on the table.

Join me with tax expert Dr Ken Henry AC to talk about tax later this month. Later this year I will be releasing a Green paper with options for community feedback. I will keep you posted, but please feel free to email the office to share your perspective on tax because this is an important conversation that we need to have.

Politics on Zoom with Allegra and Dr Ken Henry

Tax can sometimes seem intimidating but it’s a really important factor in our country. I wanted to invite Dr Ken Henry AC to do a Q&A about his original tax review and explain why he thinks we face an intergenerational tragedy. Please come along, have your questions answered, and listen to Ken who has a wealth of experience as an economist and public servant.

We'll also have time to discuss climate, cost-of-living, and all the other things that have been going on in Canberra and the community of Wentworth. Please RSVP and submit a question below.

Invite a friend who hasn't yet had the chance to hear from me.

The Zoom link will be sent in an email upon RSVPing.

Join me at Mardi Gras!

This year, I will be walking in the 2024 Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday 2nd March, under the 'Independent for Inclusion' banner, celebrating diversity across the electorates of Sydney Federal Independent MPs.

We are looking for 4-5 Wentworth members of the LGBTQIA+ community who are interested in joining this joyful procession! Note: you may be required to attend a briefing/rehearsal in advance.

Register interest!
