One of the topics I’m sure we’ll discuss next week is Peter Dutton’s shocking announcement that he would scrap Australia’s 2030 emissions reduction target.
Two years ago, people in Wentworth and across the nation sent a clear message that they wanted a parliament that delivered strong climate action.
Unfortunately, the past few days again show that the Coalition has not listened.
As well as scrapping our existing target and breaching Australia’s obligations under the Paris Agreement, Peter Dutton has said that the Coalition won’t even commit to their own 2030 target before the election.
This deeply irresponsible decision will leave voters in the dark and cause huge uncertainty for business. It also fails to acknowledge the seriousness of the climate crisis.
We can do so much better than this.
The latest analysis shows that Australia is within striking distance of achieving 43% emissions reduction by 2030. And we have already achieved at least 82% renewable electricity in South Australia, Tasmania, and the ACT.
The truth is we need to be more ambitious on climate, not less. And this will continue to be my focus.
I hope to see you all at the Potts Point Hotel next Thursday at 6.30pm.
Kind regards,
