Last week in Parliament I launched my tax Green Paper - which has been a culmination of 18 months of consulting with the experts and our community.
Hi Allegra,
Last week in Parliament I launched my tax Green Paper - which has been a culmination of 18 months of consulting with the experts and our community.
|
The tax paper outlines three long-term challenges facing our country where tax could play a role. These are increasing intergenerational inequity, declining growth and productivity, and the transition to a net-zero economy.
To do this, the tax paper argues we need to:
- Lower income taxes on working Australians
- Rebalance tax settings in favour of homeownership
- Incentivise innovation and business investment
- Rebalance the tax settings so that our system is stable to changing demographics
- Adjust tax settings to support our energy transition
- Implement institutional reform to manage future challenges
When I started this Green Paper process 18 months ago tax reform was off the table, with both major parties so scared of tax that their biggest commitment was to do ‘absolutely nothing’.
Now tax reform is finally in the frame. Not because either of the major parties have shown real courage, but because Independents and the economic reality are setting the agenda.

I want to be clear that this Green Paper is not a policy position paper and is not a representation of my personal views.
Instead, like a traditional Green Paper, it seeks to outline challenges as well as the current evidence base to provoke discussion. It does this on the basis of no increase to the current overall tax burden, though ideally, you would like to reduce taxes to help achieve reform. I am seeking feedback on this work which you can provide here.

Vandalism in Woollahra
The recent vandalism of cars and a business in Woollahra was completely unacceptable and has understandably left many people in our community feeling afraid and unwelcome.
Antisemitism and racial hatred have no place in our society.
Attacks like these are intended to intimidate. But I know that our community will remain strong – and that we will continue to support and care for each other.
One suspect has been arrested and charged. If anyone has further information or video footage please call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The war overseas is deeply affecting us all. Despite any differences in opinion on this tragic conflict, it is so important that we maintain a cohesive and inclusive society here in Australia.
I will continue to work to ensure that Wentworth is a place where everyone is welcome and I am here to support you.
If you are interested in the steps that I am taking to address antisemitism, you can read details on my website.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me and my team.
If it matters to you, it matters to me.
Kind regards,
Allegra Spender MP
