Meta has just announced a new AI image generation tool that uses your public Instagram photos to create images of you - without asking your permission first. Every Australian with an Instagram account that is set to public has been automatically opted in by default. Unless you find the setting and turn it off yourself, anyone can use Meta's tool to AI your content however they choose.

There was no notification. No pop-up asking whether you agreed. They simply turned this on by default, hoping you wouldn't notice.

This is an absolute overreach. I hear from people all the time who are worried about social media and AI companies running away with our data and our content. We have already seen the harm caused by deepfakes and non-consensual AI-generated images - and when platforms like Meta normalise using people's faces without consent, it makes all of that worse. It signals to the rest of the industry that this is acceptable. It is not.

Government is not acting fast enough - they have been largely absent from this issue. Our privacy laws have not kept up with the pace of AI development. Other countries - particularly in Europe - require explicit consent before companies can use your personal data this way. Australians deserve the same protection. We need a digital duty of care urgently.

This should never have been opt-out. It should always have been opt-in. This petition calls on the Australian Government to require that any new features which impact your privacy be opt-in by default, and to introduce stronger digital privacy laws that put Australians back in control of their own image and data.

We need to put pressure on the Government to act now. Muse Image is just one feature - Meta has already announced more AI tools are coming to Facebook and Messenger. If we don't get on top of this now, we will be playing catch-up forever.
