Hi Vicky,
I have some news I’d like to share with you.
After months of work, consultation and conversations across our community, I’m launching my first in a series of Tax White Papers.
These papers follow on from the Green Paper I launched in November 2024 that identified three key reasons for reform: younger, working Australians are struggling to get ahead; our business investment and productivity is sluggish, and our energy transition is slower and more costly than necessary.
The first white paper will focus on the first of these issues.
Next Wednesday 11th March, I’ll be speaking at the National Press Club to outline why our personal income tax system is no longer fit for purpose, and how we can reform it to restore reward for effort, strengthen intergenerational fairness, and support productivity and growth.
It's simple: Australia should be a place where you can build wealth and create opportunity off your own back, not just off your parents'. My new paper outlines how we can get back to that - responsibly and credibly.
This paper builds on the work many of you have contributed to over the past year – roundtables with economists and business leaders, conversations with young people, discussions about bracket creep and cost-of-living pressures, and analysis of how our system compares internationally.
Tax reform is not easy, but it is necessary. I believe we need a serious, practical plan that improves fairness while strengthening our economy for the long term.
I’d love you to be part of the conversation.
National Press Club Address
Wednesday 11 March, 12:30pm
I will formally launch the White Paper at the National Press Club.
The address will be televised on ABC News 24, and can also be streamed live via the National Press Club Youtube.
Community Zoom – White Paper Q&A
Wednesday 11 March, 6:00pm
Just hours after the Press Club address, I’ll host a community Zoom with economist Professor John Daley AM to debrief on the speech and explain the White Paper in plain English.
I know many won't have had the time to read the full paper yet, so there'll be opportunity to ask your questions of me, as well as challenge and interrogate the ideas.
