Join Chief Advocate from Alliance for Gambling Reform, Reverend Tim Costello and Allegra Spender MP on Zoom to discuss the government's proposed gambling legislation, which will be debated when Parliament returns in August, and what the community can do to make a difference.
Australians are the biggest gambling losers in the world, losing over $31 billion every year and gambling advertising, saturating our screens and sporting broadcasts, is a huge part of the problem. This isn't a new issue. Back in June 2023, the late Peta Murphy MP handed down a landmark parliamentary inquiry into gambling harm, recommending a complete ban on gambling advertising, a national regulator, and an end to inducements designed to keep people betting. Three years on, the government still hasn't properly responded, and the legislation now before Parliament falls well short of what Peta's review recommended.
The community has been telling us, loudly and consistently, that this isn't good enough and experts, health professionals and advocates agree. Tim has spent years campaigning on the harm gambling causes to individuals, families and communities, and he'll join Allegra to unpack what's actually in the legislation, where it falls short, and where the fight goes from here.
Bring your questions about the legislation, the Murphy Review recommendations, and what real reform should look like.
