Hi Allegra,

Over the past 18 months, I have been engaging business groups, tax experts, economists and the community to understand the pressures and priorities for tax reform in Australia.

The first step was laying out a set of principles that underpin what tax reform should be like. You can read more about the six key Principles here.

What Wentworth thinks about tax reform

Thank you to the over 1100 of you who recently filled out my tax reform survey. Your feedback will help inform the tax Green Paper I will release later in the year. Here is a summary of the results.

  • 75% of you believe tax reform should be a high priority for the government.
  • Housing affordability was the biggest overall issue across age all groups with younger people feeling locked out and older people concerned for their children and grandchildren. Many feel tax settings, such as negative gearing and CGT discounts, are contributing to unaffordability.
  • Younger people want to see a fairer income tax system, with concerns that younger working Australians are paying the bulk of individual tax.
  • Older Australians (55+) are focused on retirement security, seeking certainty around superannuation tax settings to plan for their futures.

Addressing sexual assault on campus

Last week, legislation was introduced to establish a National Student Ombudsman to address sexual violence at universities—a massive win for everyone who has been advocating for this for decades.

I met with this incredible group of women a year ago in Parliament and we went to the Education Minister with this proposal. I am very proud that he listened and we have got this great result.

I will be looking closely to ensure that this body provides students with the protection they need against discrimination and assault.

Strengthening protections against hate speech and Doxxing

New laws were introduced last week to tackle hate speech and 'doxxing'.

The hate speech laws are a step in the right direction. However, initial consultations with the LGBTQ+ and Jewish communities suggest they may not yet provide sufficient protection. I’ll be working through the details to ensure that more vulnerable groups are fully protected.

While the new 'anti-doxxing' laws are promising, we are still reviewing the details to ensure they will adequately address these malicious attacks. The Jewish community has particularly been targeted by 'doxxing' with the names, workplaces and sometimes home addresses of Jewish community members being shared online in malicious attacks.

I welcome your feedback on both of these issues, these are really important laws to get right.
